Jolly Readers
Jolly Readers uses words with the basic letter sounds in Jolly
Phonics, and not the alternative spelling of the digraphs (so ai
in snail, but not ay as in day,
or a-e as in gate). These alternative spellings will be
introduced in a later level.
The Jolly Readers use controlled vocabulary so children can read
words from their knowledge of the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics.
Only a few essential tricky words are used, and these are shown at the
back of each book.
The Jolly Readers have engaging and lively stories which children
enjoy. The problem of heavily controlled vocabulary ('cat sat on the
mat') is overcome by the much wider use of words available with digraphs,
such as splash, paint, look, and trail.
The three series each have 6 storybooks, with 8 pages per book.
The first (red) level of Jolly Readers uses words
with the basic letter sounds in Jolly Phonics, and not the
alternative spelling of the digraphs (so ai in snail, but
not ay as in day, or a-e as in gate).
These alternative spellings will be introduced in a later level.
This new second
level is slightly more advanced than the first and follows the same
lively and interesting three series. Now, in addition to the 42 letter sounds
used in the first level, y is used for the /ee/ sound at the end of words
like funny. As before, light type is used as a guide for those few
letters that should not be sounded out, such as the b in lamb, but not
the tricky words, which should already be familiar.
The Level 3 books introduce the 'magic e' for spelling
words with the long vowels, (as in make, like, bone and tune) to give a
new challenge to young readers.
These readers should be used at the beginning of the second year
of learning to read with Jolly Phonics, after Level 2. The new third
level (green) also contains some alternative spellings of the digraphs.
By Sara Wernham
Read and See Books
The Read and See books
are for children who have learned the letter sounds and are now ready to
read unknown words. The Read and See books have words that are
regular, and so can be worked out by sounding out and blending. Each of
the 24 books has pages with a single, regular word, and a picture of the
word next to it, under a flap. Children try to read each word by blending
the sounds. They can then lift the flap to see if they are correct! They
are ideal first books to send home for reading to a parent. Each book has
8 words. The words towards the end of each book tend to be longer.
