Games in the Language Classroom

Creating Stories with Children

(Dates not yet finalised)

Did you know that children taught early literacy skills using Games and Storytelling are nearly always well ahead of their chronological age level?

This fun, highly practical very hands-on workshop is for all those people and any teachers or SNOs who are concerned with helping children to reach their full academic potential.

Games in the Language Classroom by Gordon Lewis

A fresh and enjoyable collection of games for children ages 4-11, with guidance on integrating games into the English syllabus, useful classroom language, and classroom management.

Creating stories with Children by Andrew Wright

Children love making stories, orally and together in class. In doing so, they recycle the language they have been learning and use it to create something new.  This rich experience costs nothing and there is no preparation time for the teacher either!  Original ideas & activities help children tell and write stories in English. This encourages creativity, confidence, and fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English. Furthermore, we relate the child, through English, with the world outside the classroom.

Gordon Lewis

Works as a freelance teacher, trainer, trainer, and materials writer, and is also on the committee of the IATEFL Young Learners Special Interest Group where he works as a co-coordinator for events.  In 2002 he organized a large YL Conference in Bonn, Germany.  From 2001 to 2003 he was Director of Instructor Training & Development for Berlitz Kids in Princeton, New Jersey.  He is co-author of Games for Children and author of The Internet & Young Learners & Teenagers, all in the Resource Books for Teachers series published by Oxford University Press (OUP).
