Changes to the kindergarten curriculum - Music & Movement
The Ministry of Education want to update the existing kindergarten curriculum framework with the latest research about how children develop and learn. They have indicated that Music, Movement and Dance activities should be made compulsory at all early childhood centres, and that every centre should have at least one teacher well-trained in this subject.

Can we use Children's Drawing as a Lesson Planning tool?
Saturday 18th February 2012 (10am until 1pm)

Most children we observed draw spontaneously and profusely when not disturbed by external demands.

Children engage in drawing just like we do in writing, as adults. Drawing is an expressive mode of communication for young children. It is the beginning of literacy in reading and writing. In drawing, the child engages in many cognitive processes to encode and decode signs and symbols to make representations of meanings consisting of thoughts, feelings, experiences and observations of the environment. They have to master the understanding of referential function of symbols and signs as well as to make interpretation and perspective taking in the process of drawing.

The objective of the workshop is to share with you how mainstream children's drawings can be an alternative tool of assessment (from a developmental perspective) to inform teaching and learning; in particular, in curriculum planning. We shall investigate the prior knowledge and drawing structures that young children used in drawings to construct meaning. This is based on my current research of 89 child-artists and 534 drawings collated in from 5 preschools in Singapore. You are encouraged to bring along a couple of children's drawings to contribute to the discussion.

This 2-day workshop is conducted by Victoria Carlton. She is the director for The International Centre for Excellence and uses Jolly Phonics extensively. It has been a huge success in helping all her students succeed at all the literacy levels.
